Baked French Toast

8 slices raisin bread

2 cups milk, scalded

2 tablespoons plus 1/3 cup firmly packed light brown sugar

3 eggs, lightly beaten

1/4 teaspoon imitation maple flavoring

1/4 teaspoon plus 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon salt

2/3 cup all-purpose flour

1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

1/4 cup butter or margarine, softened

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease an 8 inch square baking dish. Cut each
slice of bread in half diagonally. Arrange slices, overlapping, in dish.
Combine milk and 2 tablespoons brown sugar. In large bowl, lightly beat eggs
with maple flavoring, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and salt. Gradually stir milk
mixture into eggs until well mixed. Pour over bread slices. Set dish in
shallow baking pan; set pan on oven rack. Pour enough hot water into pan to
come 1 inch up side of baking dish. Bake for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, in small
bowl, combine flour, 1/3 cup brown sugar, 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon and nutmeg.
With fork, stir in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle
over top of custard mixture. Bake for 20 minutes, or until set. Serve warm
or at room temperature.

Makes 6 servings. Mama's Corner.
